Prime Foods Smoked Salmon is raised in the cool, fresh ocean waters of Big Glory Bay Stewart Island, a remote sparsely populated island off the Southern tip of New Zealand. Strong currents from the Southern Ocean ensure the whole area is refreshed on a continuous basis. These quality Salmon are transported to the processing plant in Hororata, a small rural farming community nestled under the Southern Alps near the Rakaia Gorge and Mount Hutt in Canterbury.

  1. By international standards New Zealand farmed salmon has very low levels of undesirable PCBs, Dioxins and Mercury. This is an important advantage to hold in a world now so health conscious.
  2. Also, whereas the most commonly farmed salmon species in the world is the Atlantic, New Zealand farms the King (Chinook or Pacific) Salmon. This species has a softer texture, higher oil content and therefore superior flavour, according to many critics. Colour is also a bright almost orange/red and looks most appealing in the retail pouch.
    It is worth noting that the North American market pays a premium of up to 50% for King salmon over Atlantic salmon.
  3. Prime Foods NZ has enhanced the natural flavour and texture advantage by developing their own unique processing technique. This involves the infusion of herbs and spices into the flesh by way of a mechanical process specially developed by Prime Foods NZ’s own engineers.
